This was in the era B.D.\u2014before digital\u2014back when the Long-Playing record ruled the roost; and on our visit to a fancy Beverly Hills audio dealer, Edward brought along an LP of <!--more--> another Tzerko student, Lincoln Mayorga, playing the Brahms Handel Variations, a favorite of both of ours for Lincoln\u2019s superb playing and the superb sound quality resulting from \u201cdirect-to-disc\u201d technology.<\/p>\n<p>The salesman took us into a listening room and started the record playing. \u201cYou see, gentlemen,\u201d he commented, \u201con these speakers the piano <em>sounds<\/em> like a Steinway.\u201d Edward and I smiled and agreed with him. He smiled, too; and said, \u201cI\u2019ll leave you alone to listen.\u201d As he left the room, our barely-contained smiles grew to grins, and Edward turned to me saying, \u201cHowever, <em>we<\/em> happen to know that Lincoln\u2019s piano is a Mason &amp; Hamlin!\u201d<span class=\"jb-end-of-post\"><img class=\"jb-end-of-post\" src=\"\/Mordent.svg\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My friend Edward Auer, a fellow student of Aube Tzerko, once asked me to help him choose a stereo system.
