But even if the adult was once a y.p.d. herself\u2014even if she\u2019s now a successful performer\u2014the advice is unlikely to have any influence, because the y.p.d. sees it not as a statement of fact but a test of his commitment.<\/p>\n<p>The adult plays into this by saying, \u201cIf you can be discouraged from a career, you shouldn\u2019t try for a career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bad move! The y.p.d. responds, \u201cExcelsior!
