I was so pleased to tell Lee Hambro my discovery that you should play the first note after a relatively long note just a touch softer. Otherwise it makes a \u201cbump\u201d that disturbs the line.<\/p>\n

It was the kind of thing I knew Lee would relish; and he did. But he added that he\u2019d<\/i> been the one to discover it, and I must have learned it from him<\/i>.<\/p>\n

We never did figure out the priority; luckily, it doesn\u2019t matter. This subtlety helps players at all levels. I always mention Leonid when I teach it, and think of him when I use it\u2014which is all the time.<\/p>\n

A \u201crelatively long note\u201d might be a dotted quarter appearing in a string of 8ths, a half-note in a string of quarters\u2014 or for that matter an 8th in a string of 16ths.
