At 16, I played the last two movements of Beethoven’s 2nd Concerto at music camp with Henry Harris on second piano. My mother, who was visiting, was approached after the performance by a young woman (21 at the time) who introduced herself as Ruth Meckler, from Detroit, a pianist herself. Speaking passionately, she said two things. “You must take him to the very best teachers,” and “Tell him whatever he does, for God’s sake don’t become a pianist. It’s too hard!”
Ruth Meckler was for most of her career better known as Ruth Laredo. A great artist, a wonderful person!
